India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Visits Sri Lanka After 38 Years to Boost Ties

Rajnath Singh arrives in Colombo for a three-day Sri Lanka visit after 38 years, focusing on defence, maritime security, air-defence support, cadet exchanges and defence education under Neighbourhood First.

India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Colombo on September 8 for a three-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral defence and maritime ties under the Neighbourhood First policy.

During his visit, Singh met Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in a warm session and conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two sides recommitted to joint efforts on security and development as maritime partners.

The visit includes discussions aimed at finalizing agreements on air-defence support, cadet exchanges and defence education. The talks build on India's past assistance to Sri Lanka, including the provision of air-defence guns.

Singh's three-day visit marks India's Defence Minister's return to Sri Lanka after 38 years and highlights the long-standing historical bonds and shared interests between the two countries in the Indian Ocean region.
